Why Brooklyn

Brooklyn, Michigan is one of those places locals have long appreciated — and more people are now beginning to discover.

It's a walkable small town with a real downtown, surrounded by lakes and anchored by local businesses people rely on day to day. You can grab coffee, meet friends for dinner, pick up groceries, or browse a bookstore without getting in your car.

What draws people here is simple:

  • It's more affordable than nearby cities
  • Apartments offer more space for the money
  • Downtown is easy to walk and feels active, not empty
  • It's friendly and familiar, even if you're new

For many, Brooklyn offers something that's become harder to find elsewhere — a place that feels livable, not competitive.

Commute & Connectivity

Living in Brooklyn doesn't mean disconnecting from where you work — it means being more intentional about where you live.

With direct routes and predictable drive times, Brooklyn works well for people commuting a few days a week who want more space, comfort, and calm at home.

Typical Drive Times

  • Jackson: ~20 minutes
  • Chelsea: ~30 minutes
  • Ann Arbor: ~45 minutes

Routes are straightforward via M-50, US-127, and I-94. Drive times are predictable and often feel simpler than navigating daily city traffic.

A Good Fit for Hybrid Work

Brooklyn is especially well-suited for people with hybrid or flexible work schedules.

Instead of paying city prices to live close five days a week, many residents choose a place that feels more comfortable day to day — and commute when it actually matters. For some, the drive becomes a welcome transition: a clear boundary between work and home.

A Building Worth Saving

Built in 1868, 101 Monroe has anchored the corner of Brooklyn's village square for over 150 years. Through the decades, it served as a general store, professional offices, and community gathering place—witnessing the town's growth from a rural crossroads to a beloved destination in Michigan's Irish Hills.

After years of vacancy, the building is being thoughtfully restored into six distinctive apartments. Each unit will blend historic character—original brick, tall ceilings, those beautiful arched windows—with modern amenities and efficient layouts designed for comfortable, everyday living.

This isn't just a renovation. It's an opportunity to bring new life to a building that has meant something to this community for generations.

About the Developer

I grew up in Addison, Michigan, on my family's seventh-generation crop farm—a place that gave me a deep sense of rootedness and an early appreciation for land with history, purpose, and community meaning. That upbringing shaped my love for place and my belief in the lasting impact of caring well for what's been passed down.

After high school, a restlessness to expand my horizons took me to Cornell, where I met my husband, Patrick. From there, we built a life together across New York City, Ann Arbor, Boston, and The Netherlands.

In January of 2025, we returned to Michigan, ready to put down roots. On a trip to see our new home, I spotted 101 Monroe—and it was love at first sight. What began as a spark quickly grew into a full-scale redevelopment effort, and over the past year I've been deeply immersed in every aspect of bringing the building back to life.

Professionally, my career has focused on building and scaling operations in the tech and consulting space—often in complex, fast-moving environments. I've had the opportunity to build global operations from the ground up, launching new teams and delivery centers across the U.S., Europe, India, and Mexico. That operational background shapes how I approach development today: a deep drive to get things done and keep the project moving forward, while immersing myself in the details and seeking to learn from others.

Patrick and I have three children—Jack, Lewis, and Ellen—along with our ever-cheerful black lab, Gus. When I'm not thinking about utility hookups or construction schedules, I love running, reading just about anything, and leaving my phone behind to sit, chat, and enjoy an afternoon cup of tea.
